Q & A

Copyright © 2012 Marlin Shulist

A family portrait is an investment, a piece of art which will transcend generations to come and thus careful considerations should be made prior to photography. The following is a list of typical questions we will discuss to ensure the portrait process is a pleasant experience for all concerned and that your investment is all you expect it to be.

What happens at the pre-session consultation?

We will discuss the type of portrait you would like, be it contemporary, formal, classical, whimsical or surreal. We will discuss the people to be included in the primary portrait and any secondary portraiture you would like to include such as children or pets.

We will ask where you plan to hang your portrait to determine the correct size, consider the colors, textures and elements which will make the portrait a focal point.

A tour of your grounds or the off site location to select a sitting location

Assessing the lighting reqiuirements is the most important element of a photograph and thus our primary consideration when reviewing the sitting location.

Lastly we will review any questions you may have and then set a time and date for your portrait session.

What to wear?

After our pre-session consultation we will send you a follow up email outlining our pre-session discussions, provide any estimates you have requested and suggest attire and colors for the participants.

What can I expect the day of photography?

On the day of photography we will arrive at the location about one hour before we begin actual photography to set up the location and test our lighting. This allows us to ensure the time photographing is kept to a minimum especially if young children are involved. We will proceed with the primary portrait first and then with any secondary requests. After photography we will pack up our gear and leave the location as as we found it.

If you are coming to our studio for your portrait we will be ready for you at the appointed time.

Behavior of young children?

For children photography can either be exciting or a dreadful experience. We prefer the former and ask that you not have strict behavioral expectations of your children but allow them to express themselves and leave it to us to quarterback the event.

How much time does it take?

The time photography takes is typically determined by the youngest participant, this is why we prefer to setup and perform our checks prior to asking the family to pose.

When do you get so see the photos?

We will invite you to our studio one week after photography to preview the images from your session on our large screen to make your portrait selections and finalize your order.

What type of prints do you offer?

Family portraits are typically printed on canvas, smaller prints on a variety of papers. If you have a specific request we would be pleased to investigate the printing requirements and provide you an estimated cost.

Do you provide framing and hanging services?

Yes, our framing services are provided by the Studio's framing partners, paper layout templates for hanging canvas gallery or float wrap Collections are included with the Collection order and if you desire white glove hanging services are available to complete the installation.
